Kampoongs or kampung in
Jakarta is a system of people living in urban areas while maintaining an identity
tied to the history. It’s a portrait of a social contract with a community’s
unique identity. These people consist of immigrants (from various regions all
over the archipelago or abroad before
modern Indonesia era ) who settled and formed groups in Jakarta and exist until
now.
Their current existence was partly due to the Dutch colonial government’s
strategy of localization and ‘special protection’ in urban planning during
VOC’s rule (at that time called Batavia city), to serve their political interests.
The kampoongs
are marked with certain ethnicities that make up the majority of each kampoong.
These majorities possess their own distinct characteristics that differentiate
them from other kampoongs.
